Today, my friend Gaven and I set off on our RV journey from Shanghai to the Tibetan border. Our first stop along National Highway 318 was Jinze, Qingpu. We walked around the old village, spoke to some fisherman, and ate watermelon on a merchant’s boat. By dusk, we arrived in Changxing to learn about the town’s tea culture - famous for a purple coloured green tea that is made near bamboo. With no prior contacts in Changxing, we succeed in locating and meeting the town’s master tea maker. We were invited into Zheng Laoshi’s tea making studio, where Zheng Laoshi shared with us his love for tea and explained how love is his motivation for work. Zheng Laoshi has been making tea for over 40 years and is the only one in his tea-loving town of 60,000 people to be awarded a cultural accolade from the highest level of Chinese government.
Armed with lots of tea, I am excited for tomorrow.
