Windows Messenger 5.0的一个测试版日前由微软官方在其网站上被释放出来。不过大家也不必为微软的这个动作感到过多的惊喜，因为早在一个多月以前一些渠道广泛的网站就已经得到了此版本的 Windows Messenger 。因为早些时候被泄漏出来的Windows Longhorn中所带的Windows Messenger 也是这个版本 5.0.0149。
和前些日子Longhorn中的WinMessenger
是同一版本

是微软下一代即时通讯软件测试版本－格林威治 Greenwich 的一部分。Windows Messenger 5 支持三种即时消息服务：MSN .NET, Exchange IM (Exchange 2000的组件), 和 RTC Server （RealTime Communication Server）。 RTC 用户使用一个 互联网标准的即时消息协议－SIP (Session Initation Protocol)。

这个客户端还支持 Tablet PC 的笔迹消息（Ink Message）。简单的在一台Tablet PC上安装这个版本的 Windows Messenger 并发送一个笔迹消息，另外一台电脑就可以收到这个笔迹消息。
