  Detective n.&adj. 钻石;South Africa南非;a few hours earlier几个小时前;the police警方;thief n.窃贼;steal vt.偷窃;wait inside(动词短语)在。。。里面等待;main building主楼;take sth. off (动词短语)把。。。从。。。上面拿下来;the Customs 海关;keep guard ](动词短语)警戒,守卫;at the door在门口;to one’s surprise令某人惊讶的是;full of装满了;stone n.石头;sand n.沙子

  Part II:

1:The plane was late. Detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa.

示例2:When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.

示例3:While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel.

  2.some与others

1:When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.

示例2:While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel.

A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.(这里的had told是过去完成时,因为它是在a few hours之前发生的)

A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.(这里的would try to steal就是过去将来时,因为从someone告诉警方这个时间来看,偷窃steal是以后要发生的事情,当时还没有发生)

  Beat about the Bush(旁敲侧击、兜圈子)

Two brothers, Herbert and James, lived with their mother and a cat named Edgar. James was particularly(尤其,特别) attached to(与。。。关系亲密) the cat and when he had to leave town for several days, he left Herbert meticulous(细致的) instructions(说明) about the pet's care(对。。。 At the end of his first day away, James telephoned his brother.

  "How is Edgar?" he asked.

  "Edgar is dead," Herbert answered.

There was a pause(停顿,沉默). Then James said: "Herbert, you're insensitive(迟钝的,不敏感的). You know how close I was to Edgar. You should have broken the news to me slowly(把消息分成几段慢慢地告诉我). When I asked about Edgar tonight, you should have said 'Edgar's on the roof(屋顶), but I've called the fire department(消防队) to get him down.

"And tomorrow when I called, you could have said 'the firemen were having trouble getting Edgar down, but you were hopeful(希望的,充满希望的) they would succeed.'Then when I called the third time, you could have told me that 'the firemen had done their best, but unfortunately(不幸地) Edgar had fallen off the roof(从屋顶掉了下来) and was at the veterinarian's(兽医诊所).' Then when I called the last time, you could have said that although everything possible had been done for Edgar, he had died.' That's the way a sensitive(敏感的) man would have told me about Edgar. And, oh, before I forget," James added, "How is mother?"

"Uh," Herbert said, pausing for a moment, "She is on the roof."
