《转向抽象:19761985上海实验艺术回顾展》,于528日在上海证大现代艺术馆举行。1976-1985的上海美术史是一段特殊的历史,在文革后的很长一段时间里,文化气氛依然紧张,但是上海艺术家的实验艺术在文革期间从未中断过,很多艺术家已经在这段时间展现出了他们非凡的艺术创造力。虽然在这段时间里,很多艺术作品还表现为一种幼稚的对西方现代艺术流派的模仿,但是在艺术语言的创新方面,无疑给死气沉沉的上海现代艺术带来新的契机。

 

《转向抽象:19761985上海实验艺术回顾展》,集合了“85新潮”前,上海25位艺术家的64件带有实验艺术性质的作品。从64件作品中,我们可以清晰的理出上海现代艺术的发展脉络,他们一改文革美术中的主题叙事的创作风格,在油画、水粉、水彩、水墨的领域表现出了独特的创造力。有的甚至突破了门类的界限,最早出现了综合材料在二维平面内的运用。

 

此次参加展览的艺术家现在大多依然活跃在抽象观念艺术领域,并且在国内外都享有盛誉。他们中有为中国早期现代教育作出贡献的沈天万,有较早运用综合材料而后转向装置艺术的张健君,有走在实验水墨前沿的仇德树,有转向观念绘画的李山、余友涵……虽然他们在当时创作的艺术作品在现在看来是青涩的,但是把这些作品放在当时的境况里,他们对现代艺术发展的贡献是不容忽视的。

 

此次展览以时间为线索,通过对当时比较重要的展览的梳理,重新刷新和定位中国现代艺术史的开端。艺术史应该秉承追认的原则,在“85新潮”前的上海,新潮已经不新了!

Turn to Abstract: Retrospective of Shanghai Experimental Art from 1976 to 1985 will be held at Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art on 28, May. 1976-1985 is a special period in the history of fine arts in Shanghai. Though it had been quite a while after Cultural Revolution, the overall cultural atmosphere was still very tense. Nevertheless, experimental art of Shanghai artists had never completely discontinued during the Cultural Revolution. A lot of artists had shown their extraordinary talents and creativity during this particular decade. Despite the fact that art works created within this period were widely considered as imitation of Western contemporary art schools, it did bring fresh blood to the stagnant art scene in Shanghai in terms of innovation of artistic language.

 

Turn to Abstract: Retrospective of Shanghai Experimental Art from 1976 to 1985 will exhibit 64 experimental art woks made by 25 Shanghai artists before the 85 New Wave. The development trend of contemporary art in Shanghai can be clearly perceived from the 64 pieces. They have completely subverted the previous style prevailing in the field of fine arts and shown unique creativity in the fields such as oil painting, gouache, watercolor and wash painting. Some have even broken through the boundaries between different categories. Comprehensive materials, for the first time, have found their way into two-dimensional plane.

 

Most of the artists participating in the exhibition still play an active role in the field of abstract conceptual art and enjoy high reputation both at home and abroad. Amongst them, there are Shen Tianwan, who has made remarkable contribution to the early modern education in China, Zhang Jianjun, who is one of the pioneers in adopting comprehensive materials and then has turned to installation art, Qiu Deshu, who is a pioneer in experimental wash painting, and Li Shan and Yu Youhan, who have turned to conceptual painting Although the works made in the early stage of their career can be regarded as immature from a contemporary perspective, the contribution they have made to the development of contemporary art is undeniably substantial.

 

Organized in Chronological order, the exhibition aims to relocate the threshold of the history of Chinese Contemporary art through research in the important exhibitions during that period. The art history should acknowledge, as it often did in the past, that even before “85 New Wave”, the new wave was no longer deemed new in Shanghai.
