其中枪管升温过快和更换枪管困难是M60最主要的麻烦。由于枪管升温快，射手在速射200发弹后就需要更换枪管（关于M60的射速和枪管更换频率的关于请参考《美军轻步兵火力支援阵地》一文中的列表）。当持续射击时，枪管表面温度可达到华氏500度。由于M60的两脚架和活塞筒是固定在枪管上，而提把安装在机匣上，因此更换枪管时，通常是由1号射手一手抱枪托一手握提把，把武器指向安全方向，而2号射手则戴上隔热的石绵手套，扳开枪管定位杆然后拉出整个枪管组杆，接着再装上新的枪管。然后由于M60的准星也是固定在枪管上的，而且准星不能进行调整，因此1号射手不得不在重新射击时再次进行归零校正以配合新枪管。两脚架、活塞筒固定在枪管上不光给更换枪管带来麻烦，对于2号射手来说也是增加了不必要的负担。

澳大利亚的M60与美国的稍有不同，根据丛林战的经验进行了一些改进。当巡逻队在接敌时机枪手立即进行火力压制，掩护其他士兵进入最近的掩护物建立射击阵地。因此最初澳大利亚的射手在部队行进时是使用只有约15或20发的短弹链，这样的短弹链对于第一次开火射击是足够的，因为当部队在穿越丛林时拖着一条完整的100发弹链会很麻烦。后来澳大利亚人又设计了一种可装28-40发的“预备反应弹匣”（ready reaction magazine），实际上是一个铝制的小弹链盒，弹盒可以方便地挂在机枪的左侧，其容量足够最初接敌的交互火力，在进入掩体后，再装上一条完整的弹链射击。
